Since the shop opened, a steady stream of ThemeForest buyers have converted their purchase codes into license keys on the migration page. A few of them then met a notice in their WordPress dashboard — “your license will expire in 3 months” — and asked a very fair question: did I just trade my lifetime updates for a subscription?
Short answer: no. Nothing you bought is going anywhere. Here’s exactly how the two licenses relate.
What you bought on ThemeForest — and keep forever
Your ThemeForest purchase includes the theme and access to every published update, downloadable any time from your ThemeForest Downloads page. The download package covers the theme and its bundled premium plugins. None of that expires, none of it depends on a license key, and nothing about migrating changes it.
What the free migrated license adds
Converting your purchase code creates a free license key. It powers the conveniences: automatic theme updates right in your dashboard, one-click installation of the bundled premium plugins, one-click demo import, and direct support from me. It runs for the rest of your ThemeForest support period plus 3 months — and if your support has already ended, you still get the 3 months.
This replaces the previous auto-update system that served ThemeForest buyers for years — that system is being retired, which is why update delivery now runs through a license key.
What “expires” actually means
When the free license lapses:
- Keeps working: your site, your theme, every plugin already installed. Nothing on your site changes at all.
- Still yours: every published update, downloadable manually from ThemeForest — same as it’s always been.
- Pauses: the automatic lane — in-dashboard updates, one-click plugin installs, demo import — and direct support.
So the expiry notice isn’t a countdown on your theme. It’s a countdown on convenience.
If you want the automatic lane back
That’s what the regular license covers — $59/year ($49 for Voelas), the same license direct buyers get: automatic updates, plugin installs, demo import and support, for as long as it runs. And if subscriptions aren’t your thing, there’s a one-time lifetime license ($179, or $149 for Voelas) — pay once, keep the automatic lane forever. Entirely optional either way, and your ThemeForest access stays intact no matter what you choose.
One practical note if you open a support ticket: the support desk has two kinds of categories — ones verified by an Envato purchase code and ones marked (license key). After migrating, use the (license key) category for your theme; a purchase-code category can’t validate a license key and will call it invalid. Anything still unclear, open a ticket — I answer every one.
